New Paltz teacher creates postal system at school

Hudson Valley teacher Melissa Feldmann helps keep students, teachers, and staff at Lenape Elementary School in New Paltz connected using one of the oldest forms of communication: Feldman created a postal system at school.

The fourth-grade teacher drew inspiration for the program from her experience participating in the US Postal System’s ‘Wee Deliver’ postal project when she was in school. She says the program will help with students’ social-emotional learning as they navigate learning through the COVID-19 pandemic.

What do you want to know

  • The fourth-grade teacher found inspiration for the program from her experience participating in the US Postal System’s ‘Wee Deliver’ postal project when she was in school
  • Students will be able to write letters to peers, faculty, and staff to maintain a social connection with those who may no longer share the same classroom with them or who may be in a different grade level.
  • The School Postal System will also help students learn about how a US post office works.

“It is something so important and valuable to our students, especially in the current climate, where they have left school, then returned to school, and every day their whole world can change in some way” , says Feldmann.

Students will be able to write letters to their peers, teachers and staff to maintain a social connection with those who may no longer share the same class with them or who are at a different grade level.

“They are so thrilled when they can write a letter to a friend, but the joy you see when they get a letter from someone else is exactly why I wanted to start a program like this” , says Feldmann.

The school postal system will also help students learn about the workings of a US post office.

“There will be a postman for each class so that every student has the chance to deliver mail in a year,” Feldmann said.

She hopes the project will help students develop their writing skills and help those who are a bit shy feel more comfortable expressing themselves.

Teachers are working on a way to give students privacy over their letters, but are also making sure the system isn’t used to bully other students.
